Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery: What’s your Phone plan? Satellite communications is an essential back-up for any commercial enterprise. In most cases a satellite phone back-up system will be the cheapest form insurance to you bottom line and peace of mind.
An iridium phone with battery back-up power can be installed as an extension to your PBX giving everyone in the office access to coordinate disaster recovery procedures. Several models are also portable and may be removed and carried should a site need to be evacuation, keeping office personnel in constant critical communication.
Many of the handheld and portable satellite phone products with the addition of some simple cabling and antennae may be perfectly suited to the job. There are also a suite of products that lend themselves to a more robust installation including the seamless integration of satellite phone access with your in-house legacy PBX system. The options outlined in this section are not mutually exclusive and in fact, may be ‘layered’ for added security, convenience and versatility.
The solutions displayed below generally fall under 2 categories:
- Fixed/detachable
- Iridium/Inmarsat
Fixed/detachable solutions
Fixed solutions, once installed, cannot offer communications outside the respective installation which is typically not further than a WIFI or Bluetooth (30ft) handset. However, they tend to offer a greater range of indoor connectivity options. A detachable solution will allow the transceiver to be disengaged. The respective user can then take the unit where he/she pleases.
For voice and fax applications, Iridium based solutions will tend to be the most economical in terms of hardware expense and offer superior coverage especially for locations north of 65 and south of 45 degrees. They will also be the most versatile with detachable stow-and-go handset options.
Iridium/Inmarsat based solutions
Inmarsat based solutions will provide high speed data connectivity offering simultaneous multi-user voice and bandwidth hungry data applications such as video streaming, large file transfers and web browsing.

As with the Beam RST310 solution, in the event of an evacuation or as needed the 9505A can simply be snapped out of it’s cradle for ‘stow-and-go’ operations in the field.
