This handy equipment weighs under a pound with a built-in power supply so you can still travel light and unencumbered with standard-feature stowaway/collapsible antennas.
While handheld satellite phones need a line of sight with the sky (foliage and clouds are no problem), all Satworx handheld solutions are walk-and-talk capable. This means that users do not need to maintain a static position, which is important if you don’t know what’s coming at you; water, fire, hail (of bullets) or brimstone.
For unrivaled coverage and general reliability we recommend the 9555 world phone, a smaller, lighter upgrade to the 9505a and loaded with convenient new features. Most importantly, it is powered by the Iridium network, independently proven to offer the most reliable satellite phone service over competitive offerings for on-demand voice communications. While the GSP 1700 is smaller/lighter then its predecessor the underlying Globalstar service has been plagued by connection issues due to malfunctioning satellite software and degradation issues. So while there are compelling prince points to Globalstar hardware and service one must ask of what use is a satellite phone that cannot make a call when you need it to. Service is expected to improve by the 1st qtr of 2010 at which point for certain coverage areas there will be welcome competition. The Isatphone is a recent entry worth considering if subscribers are comfortable with the limited coverage footprint.
Available accessories and example applications are listed on the respective product details pages. Be aware that almost all of the handset listed on this page can be integrated with accessories to perform equally well on a plane, ship or building. In fact an added advantage of building a solution around a handheld unit is that should the need arise it can be detached and carried away, keeping the respective human resources connected.

GlobalStar GSP-1700
Barely losing out to the Isatphone for title of the lightest satellite handset by a mere feathers weight (.05 oz.), the GSP-1700 provides a colorful and economic alternative for leisure requirements in North America, South America (coverage is mixed in central America) and Australia. Unlike the other satellite networks, the GSP-1700 Globalstar constellation incorporates several ground base stations in multiple countries which may impact coverage/rates depending on the political situation on the ground. However this is not an issue for use in North America. |
