If you often find yourself on the other eighty-six percent of the planet which is not adequately covered by traditional landline or international cell phone service then you are on the right web page.
The 9505A satellite phone addresses these situations by providing coverage in all ocean areas, air routes and landmasses.
The 9505A utilizes the Iridium satellite constellation for unparalleled reliability and seamless connectivity at the poles and everywhere in between. Its shock resistant exterior makes it an easy choice for industrial or rugged applications while its light weight and small frame make it the ideal choice for engineers, emergency service crews and executives alike.
Regardless of your application, business or pleasure, you can always be in touch across seas and time zones, in remote locations and on the go. One global phone number is all you need, throughout the entire world, to keep connected.
Unlike other satellite phones which are "portable" but must be stationary to receive a signal and initiate/complete a call, this phone provides excellent voice quality and functions in-motion for walk-and-talk applications (think chasing tornadoes, or calling in an airstrike while you run for cover).
Other handheld options we offer include the IsatPhone.
Data: Email and Internet
Data is available albeit at a slow but functional 9.6kbps speed with a data kit (sold-separately). In other words text emails are fine but avoid PowerPoint attachments. Like voice functionality data service will operate while in motion which is most applicable to a marine vessel or vehicle.
You will need:
For faster data speeds you may want to consider a portable solution such as the Thrane & Thrane Explorer 110 which weighs under a 1kg and offers broadband speeds for a single-user (multi-user options are available). Be advised that these units while portable must be stationary to receive a signal and transmit.
For faster data speeds while in motion please review our Vehicle BGAN and Marine Fleet Broadband solutions.
Line of site with the sky is required to obtain a signal but don't let that stop you from using your 9505A indoors or from the safety of your vehicle.
Poor Man's Car Kit
An included auxiliary antenna with magnetic mount sticks securely to the roof of your vehicle with a 1 meter (3ft) cable allowing you to receive a signal from inside the cabin of your vehicle. An larger auxiliary antenna (mobile magnetic mount) with a longer 5m cable is available as well.
You will need:
- Mobile Magnetic Mount Antenna
- Auto Accessory Adapter
Simply plug in the included DC auto charger, attach the included hands-free headset, and presto: You have rigged up a poor man's car kit for satellite phones, all without needing to purchase additional hardware.
Drive in style Car Kit
For an in-vehicle professional look an optional car kit provides a cradle for your 9505A which also charges the 9505A, speakers for hands free talking and a handset for private conversations. This kit will also work on smaller boats.
Fixed Site Solution - Made easy with your 9505A
The 9505a Iridium satellite phone can also be kitted out to be used at fixed-site locations, which might include disaster back-up (for a university or corporation) or primary communications for a remote installation (building a pipeline through a rainforest or just studying the rainforest) with the appropriate add-on equipment.
The most basic setup employs 3 items: some coax cabling (15, 20 or 25 meters but no longer due to attenuation - basically you start to lose the signal) along with a fixed mast antenna and a tnc connecter which actually connects the cable and phone.
Cable options
- 15 Meter Cable (using LMR 400)
- 20 Meter Cable (using LMR 600)
- 25 Meter Cable (using LMR 600)
Antenna options
- Fixed Mast Antenna (Threaded Pipe Mount Version) - marine tested
- Fixed Mast Antenna (U-bolt Mount)
And while there is not much in life for free the tnc connector is available at no chargewith the purchase of any cable.
Bolt the antennae to the roof of your structure and then run the cable down to the pace where you plan on using the phone. It's a simple and inexpensive solution where satellite communication is essential while you can still remain safe from the heat, rain wind or bullets outside.
Fixed Site Solution: Office with PBX - Not just the fax
Add a docking station for a more elaborate solution and you can assign an extension to your 9505a and give everyone in the office access to a satellite phone line. This is most applicable to offices using Iridium satellite phones in areas plagued by uncertain weather conditions which often affect primary communications such as local landlines and cell towers alike. The docking station also provides a (very slow: remember 9.6kbps max speed) fax feature so the office keeps on ticking no matter what's going on outside.
You will need:
The benefit of a 9505a-based solution is that at any time you can simply disconnect the Iridium phone unit from the docking station, cradle, or aux antenna and walk away from your car or fixed site location (or if you're leaving your boat, hopefully your next choice is not a long swim) without losing your ability to communicate on your Iridium 9505a.
Iridium Out to Sea
The 9505A will work at sea but as on land you will need line of site with the sky. The unit makes a great primary for ship to shore calling in terms of quality and price. Because the 9505A caries its own independent power supply, every ship should be equipped with one unit for use as a back-up (think power failure on your vessel) at a minimum. For larger vessels wishing to take advantage of the Iridium service as a primary carrier please review the Sailor system in the Marine Section.
The 9505A up, up and away
Your 9505A can work in airplanes with unpressurized cabins and big windows (remember you need line of site with the sky) which essentially limits use to single engine Cessna's or piper cubs. You may also be able to utilize the auxiliary antennae in a similar fashion to the "Poor man's car kit" described above however you may wish to contact your aircraft manufacturer first. Naturally we recommend pilots watch the skies and their instruments and not the keypad of their 9505A.
For general aviation the S200 Tracker w/Voice can provide real-time resource tracking of aircraft and of course, you can always give the pilot a call. Details are available in the Aviation Section
The 9505A provides essential communications in a variety of configurations at a low price point. No other satellite phone system offers the flexibility to be sitting in a vehicle or fixed structure one minute and then walking-and-talking out in the field the next, seamlessly.
