For secure and reliable communications in and around the Indian Ocean there is no lighter satellite handheld then the Isatphone.
The full-featured Inmarsat IsatPhone satellite phone is ideal for travelers who work or play in this region prone to terrestrial network outages due to war, weather and simple neglect.
For satellite access the IsatPhone utilizes Inmarsat’s latest generation I-4 satellite over the Indian Ocean Region for coverage within Africa, the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East and South East Asia. Its compact frame makes it the perfect travel companion on the job site, exploring Samarkand or chasing down pirates in the Indian Ocean.
This unit also supports email from the handset offering many of the qualities you would expect in a cell phone but with seamless connectivity as you move off the grid, away from major metropolitan areas where traditional landline and cell phone networks are not reliable or non-existent.
Be advised that this unit while smaller and more affordable, should not be considered a substitute for the proven and reliable Iridium 9555 satellite phone.

Data: Email and Internet
At 2.4 kbps, data is painfully slow in satellite mode; however, a respectable 9.6 kbps can be achieved in GSM mode. Though if you can get a GSM signal, you must be somewhere near civilization, and we suggest you seek out an internet café before you hook up your optional data kit (sold separately from the IsatPhone).
For faster data speeds you may want to consider the lightweight and Explorer 110 which offers a single user broadband data speeds and phone access (multi-user options are available). Be advised however that this equipment must be stationary to receive a signal and transmit.
For faster in-transit/motion data speeds, please review the Satworx Vehicle BGAN and Marine Fleet Broadband solutions. When purchasing satellite phones, users must not only consider the location of intended use, but must be sure to factor in any high-speed data needs as well.
Line of site with the sky is required to obtain a signal (clouds and foliage are ok – but artificial structures are not) however your IsatPhone can be outfitted with a vehicle or indoor kit so you can transparently move between environments regardless of what’s overhead, with no loss of service.
Applications
IsatPhone Vehicle solutions – with nospeed limit
An IsatPhone car kit is available for crystal clear voice communications on the go.
Your IsatPhone works in-doors too!
The IsatPhone can be accessorized with an ‘indoor-kit’ to work inside buildings or structures with an artificial roof. An included cradle makes for an easy transition between your desk and the field.
Inmarsat Handheld Out to Sea
Your IsatPhone will work throughout the Indian Ocean and makes a great primary or supplement to existing ship/shore communications. Commercial and law enforcement applications often require rapid onshore deployments for which the IsatPhone is perfectly suited for. At sea or onshore one phone is all you need.
For larger vessels wishing to take advantage of Inmarsat service with crew calling and high speed data please check-out the Sailor FleetBroadband system in the Marine Section.
IsatPhone Pro Coverage

This map depicts Inmarsat's expectations of coverage, but does not represent a guarantee of service. The availability of service at the edge of coverage areas may require more directional pointing of the antenna to the satellite. IsatPhone Pro coverage July 2010.
